What is Chicory and What are its health benefits?

From time immemorial all South Indian homes prefer filter coffee, a coffee that has a hint of a sweetish caramel taste and aroma which is got by blending the coffee powder ( ground coffee ) with chicory.

What is Chicory?

Chicory root comes from a plant of the dandelion family that bears bright blue flowers. Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a flowering plant whose root is popular as a coffee substitute. Employed for centuries in cooking and traditional medicine, it’s commonly used to make a coffee alternative, as it has a similar taste and colour.

The fibre from this root is said to have numerous health benefits and is often extracted for use as a food additive or supplement.

It is the roots of the chicory plant that are ground and made into a powder to blend and mix with coffee. It is often used as a caffeine-free beverage on its own or as a mixture with ground-roasted coffee because it enhances the taste, and aroma and makes coffee strong.

Unlike roasting coffee, chicory is caramelized. Panduranga Coffee is the only coffee industry in India roasting and granulating both coffee and chicory in German roasters and grinders.

How do we make ground chicory from Chicory root?

The Chicory roots are sourced from Jamnagar, Gujrat. The sourced roots are roasted using Tornado roaster at our Coffee Manufacturing Plant in Chikmagalur. Tumbling over and over the watchful eye of roastmaster, the roots are transformed by fire and air. At the exact moment of perfection, roots are discharged from the roaster into a cooling zone where they are immediately blasted by rapidly flowing cold air and fixed at their ideal flavour, color and development.
